Getting started with Jekyll
A beginner-friendly walkthrough for creating a static blog with Jekyll, Liquid, Markdown, and sim...
I start from Shopify Dawn, then build a brand overlay on top. The store feels custom. Dawn stays the official theme underneath.
If the store is already on another official theme, that can be the base instead. The official theme keeps cart, variants, checkout hooks, Theme Editor, and analytics. The custom work lives in its own files: product cards, cart drawer, header, product page, collection banners, membership.
Dawn files stay thin. They pick the custom entrypoint, or add a class. When Shopify ships a Dawn update, I re-apply a short wire-up list.
This becomes a unique theme for your store.
Product cards, cart, collection, and product page share type, color, and motion. Content conventions do the rest: a title like Quietly Relentless Oversized Tee - White / Black becomes name plus colorway; description headings become accordions; collection metafields drive drop banners and performance specs. You edit products in Admin. The theme reads that structure.
Shopify’s Theme Editor still works. Sections, blocks, and settings stay yours.
if brand branchesLanding, drops, product, cart, and membership follow the brand. You can still update the official theme underneath.
I need collaborator access to the store, any design files you already have, and a list of apps that must keep working. If you are not sure whether you need an overlay or a smaller fix, say that. Sometimes the answer is a smaller fix.

Dawn stays the official theme. Custom work sits on top. A Dawn update is a short wire-up list.
Yes. Preview themes exist so the live store can stay up while we work. I need collaborator access and a list of apps that must keep working.
Dawn files stay thin: an entrypoint or a class. I re-apply that wire-up.
The current store or the designs, collaborator access, and a short list of what the theme must do. If you are not sure you need an overlay, say that first. Sometimes a smaller fix is enough.
